Prayers for use before Mass

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ I have come here in obedience to your will, to offer this sacrifice which you have commanded us to make in memory of you, that I may feed upon your body and blood; that I may grow in grace and be your true servant.

I offer this Mass for………………. and all who need our prayers.

Bless the priest who will say Mass and all who join us in this celebration, that we may share in the worship of heaven which we offer to your Father in the power of the Holy Spirit, with all the angels and saints. We make this prayer for your honour and glory. Amen.

As the bell rings, please stand.

The clergy and servers make their way to the Altar, we sing the following hymn.

THE FIRST READING: (Please be seated)

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles:                                                Acts 9:26-31

When Saul got to Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him: they could not believe he was really a disciple. Barnabas, however, took charge of him, introduced him to the apostles, and explained how the Lord had appeared to Saul and spoken to him on his journey, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. Saul now started to go round with them in Jerusalem, preaching fearlessly in the name of the Lord. But after he had spoken to the Hellenists, and argued with them, they became determined to kill him. When the brothers knew, they took him to Caesarea, and sent him off from there to Tarsus.

The churches throughout Judaea, Galilee and Samaria were now left in peace, building themselves up, living in the fear of the Lord, and filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

THE RESPONSORIAL PSALM:

You, Lord, are my praise in the great assembly.

My vows I will pay before those who fear him.

The poor shall eat and shall have their fill.

They shall praise the Lord, those who seek him.

May their hearts live for ever and ever! R.

All the earth shall remember and return to the Lord,

all families of the nations worship before him;

They shall worship him, all the mighty of the earth;

before him shall bow all who go down to the dust. R.

And my soul shall live for him, my children serve him.

They shall tell of the Lord to generations yet to come,

declare his faithfulness to peoples yet unborn:

‘These things the Lord has done.’ R.

THE SECOND READING:

A reading from the first letter of St John:                                              1 John 3:18-24

My children,

our love is not to be just words or mere talk,

but something real and active;

only by this can we be certain

that we are children of the truth

and be able to quieten our conscience in his presence,

whatever accusations it may raise against us,

because God is greater than our conscience and he knows everything.

My dear people,

if we cannot be condemned by our own conscience,

we need not be afraid in God’s presence,

and whatever we ask him,

we shall receive,

because we keep his commandments

and live the kind of life that he wants.

His commandments are these:

that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ

and that we love one another

as he told us to.

Whoever keeps his commandments

lives in God and God lives in him.

We know that he lives in us

by the Spirit that he has given us.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (Please Stand)

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia alleluia!

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia alleluia!

Make your home in me, as I make mine in you.

Whoever remains in me bears fruit in plenty.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia alleluia!

THE GOSPEL

The Lord be with you.

And with your Spirit.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to St.John:                      John 15: 1-8

Glory to you O Lord

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘I am the true vine,

and my Father is the vinedresser.

Every branch in me that bears no fruit

he cuts away,

and every branch that does bear fruit

he prunes to make it bear even more.

You are pruned already,

by means of the word that I have spoken to you.

Make your home in me, as I make mine in you.

As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself,

but must remain part of the vine,

neither can you unless you remain in me.

I am the vine,

you are the branches.

Whoever remains in me, with me in him,

bears fruit in plenty;

for cut off from me you can do nothing.

Anyone who does not remain in me

is like a branch that has been thrown away – he withers;

these branches are collected and thrown on the fire,

and they are burnt.

If you remain in me

and my words remain in you,

you may ask what you will

and you shall get it.

It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit,

and then you will be my disciples.’

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia alleluia!

THE HOMILY            (Please sit)

THE NICENE CREED  (Please stand)

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God,

Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(At the words that follow, up to and including ‘and became man’, all bow.)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Reader will add:

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with Thee.

Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us Sinners now

and at the hour of our death. Amen

After a short silence,

the Celebrant concludes the Prayer of the Faithful.

1 Alleluia, sing to Jesus,

His the sceptre, his the throne;

Alleluia, his the triumph,

His the victory alone:

Hark the songs of peaceful Sion

Thunder like a mighty flood;

Jesus, out of every nation,

Hath redeemed us by his Blood.  '

2 Alleluia, not as orphans

Are we left in sorrow now;

Alleluia, he is near us,

Faith believes, nor questions how;

Though the cloud from sight received him

When the forty days were o'er,

Shall our hearts forget his promise,

I am with you evermore'?

3 Alleluia, Bread of angels,

Thou on earth our Food, our Stay;

Alleluia, here the sinful

Flee to thee from day to day;

Intercessor, Friend of sinners,

Earth's Redeemer, plead for me,

Where the songs of all the sinless

Sweep across the crystal sea.

4  Alleluia, King eternal,

Thee the Lord of lord we own;

  Alleluia, born of Mary,

Earth thy footstool, Heaven thy throne:

Thou within the veil has entered,

Robed in flesh, our great High Priest;

Thou on earth both Priest and Victim

In the Eucharistic Feast.

Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty Father.

The celebrant sings the prayers over the gifts and we respond:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth, heaven and earth, are full of your glory,

Lord God of hosts.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the high-est.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the high-est.

Blessed, blessed is he who comes, blessed, blessed is he who comes,

blessed is he, blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the high-est.

The mystery of faith:

We proclaim your Death, O Lord, we proclaim your Death, O Lord,

                                                                                        Gathering Mass Paul Inwood

The Priest continues until:

… Through Him, and with Him, and in Him,   Amen.

O God almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,   Amen.

all glory and honour is yours, for ever and ever.   Amen.                             Lourdes Doxology

At the Saviour’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us Lord, we pray, from every evil; graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever.

THE SIGN OF PEACE

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be with you always:

And with your spirit.

THE AGNUS DEI                  Sung

Jesus, risen Lord, triumphant king:

Jesus, true redeemer of the world:

Hear our prayer, have mercy; hear our prayer, have mercy;

give us your peace.

Jesus, bursting from the shattered tomb:

Jesus, might victor over death:

Hear our prayer, have mercy; hear our prayer, have mercy;

give us your peace.

Jesus, Lord of life and Lord of light:

Jesus, here in form of bread and wine:

Hear our prayer, have mercy; hear our prayer, have mercy;

give us your peace.

                                                                                Communion Song 3 Paul Inwood

As the priest shows us the consecrated Host he says:

Behold the Lamb of God; behold him who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,

but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

The priest first receives the Sacrament and then says the communion antiphon.

All baptised Christians who receive communion in their own churches are welcome

to receive Holy Communion here.

If you require a gluten free host please tell one of the stewards.

When directed please come forward to receive Holy Communion.

If you prefer a blessing, please come forward with your head bowed and arms crossed.

As you receive the Sacrament the priest says:

The body of Christ/The blood of Christ and we reply  Amen.

During Communion the following hymn is sung:

1 In our day of thanksgiving one psalm let us offer

For the saints who before us have found their reward;

When the shadows of death fell upon them we sorrowed,

But now we rejoice that they rest in the Lord.

2 In the morning of life, and at noon, and at even,

He called them away from their worship below;

But not till his love, at the font and the altar,

Had girt them with grace for the way they should go.

3 These stones that have echoed their praises are holy,

And dear is the ground where their feet have once trod,

Yet here they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims,

And still they were seeking the city of God.

4 Sing praise then, for all who here sought and here found them,

Whose journey is ended , whose perils are past;

They believed in the light , and it’s glory is round them,

Where the clouds of earth’s sorrow are lifted at last.

                                                                                                          William Draper 1855-1933

The bars from heaven's high portals fell.
Let hymns of praise his triumph tell.

From death's dread sting thy servants free,
That we may live and sing to thee.

1 Judge Eternal, throned in splendour,
Lord of lords and King of kings,
With your living fire of judgment
Purge this land of bitter things;
Solace all its wide dominion
With the healing of thy wings.

2 Still the weary folk are pining
For the hour that brings release,
And the city’s crowded clangour
Cries aloud for sin to cease,
And the homesteads and the woodlands
Plead in silence for their peace.

3 Crown, O God, your own endeavour;
Cleave our darkness with thy sword;
Feed the faithless and the hungry
With the richness of thy word;
Cleanse the body of this nation
Through the glory of the Lord.
